Utilize a hydrogen reactions lab to optimize renewable fuels processing

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.: Lebrecht, T.  |  Duhamel, D.

Leading technology developers in the refining space are utilizing various catalysts to enhance the adjusted reaction chemistry, but this does not directly address how to optimize hydrogen utilization for the hydrodeoxygenation and isomerization/cracking processing steps. To ensure the right equipment outlay and calibration for these hydrogenation applications, replicating the process in a lab setting can help identify efficiencies and yield improvements for a fraction of the cost that a refiner would incur attempting to achieve that optimization through modifications at commercial scale.

Catalyst safety assessment: Making catalyst and adsorbent startups safer

Shell Projects & Technology: Groendijk, W.  |  Buijs, A.

An unease around potential high temperature and pressures during fresh catalyst and adsorbent startups—which can lead to situations where designed pressures and temperatures are exceeded—led the authors’ company to create the Catalyst Safety Assessment (CSA) methodology.

The distinct operational advantages of alumina-supported catalysts for hydrocracker pretreat and hydrotreating applications

Topsoe Inc.: Singh, R.  |  Maldonado, X. E. R.
Topsoe A/S: Johansson, F. B.

Hydroprocessing units in refineries process crude oil feedstocks in the presence of hydrogen and catalysts at high temperatures and pressures to produce clean fuels (i.e., gasoline, diesel, jet) while meeting stringent environmental standards dictated by U.S. and EU frameworks.
