Two approaches to sulfur management

Hydrocarbon Processing Staff: Thinnes, Billy

Sulfur is naturally present as an impurity in fossil fuels. When the fuels are burned, the sulfur is released as sulfur dioxide—an air pollutant that contributes to respiratory problems for human..

Hydrogen perspectives for 21st century refineries

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.: Farnand, S.  |  Li, J.
Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology: Ratan, S.

As refining market trends continue to support increased demand for H2, its availability and cost are critical for many refiners, creating a tough environment for securing reliable, efficient and environmentally-friendly H2.

Choose the right metering technology for ethylene furnaces

Emerson Process Management: Lieberg, M.  |  Pihlaja, R.

An ethylene plant’s main purpose is to convert hydrocarbon feedstock, usually natural gas liquids or naphtha, into a “cracked gas” that contains ethylene and other higher value products..

How sensitive is your treating plant to operating conditions?

Optimized Gas Treating: Weiland, R. H.
Raschig GmbH: Schultes, M.
Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad and Tobago: Maharaj, N.
ConocoPhillips: Praderio, A.
INEOS Americas: Santos, J.

A normal expectation in the course of operating an amine treating plant for acid gas removal is that small changes in operating conditions will result in correspondingly small responses in plant performance. However, such expectations are not always well founded. To establish credibility for the process simulator used in the design of a new LNG plant, the mass-transfer rate-based simulation results for the new plant are compared with performance data from an operating LNG plant.

HP Editorial Comment: The silent assassin: Corrosion

Hydrocarbon Processing Staff: Romanow, Stephany

This month’s special report focuses on corrosion. Often, uncontrolled corrosion undermines the mechanical integrity of process equipment and infrastructure. It is often identified as the root cau..

HP Editorial Comment: By the numbers

Hydrocarbon Processing Staff: Romanow, Stephany

At times, engineers, bankers, scientists and accountants can be obsessed with numbers. Why? Because numbers are vital, especially in the design and operation of process units and equipment. Anniversar..

Consider a systematic approach for safety monitoring

Emerson Process Management: Wilson, G.

Any facility dealing with bulk hydrocarbons must monitor safety conditions at all times. A leak of flammable or toxic material can occur at any time, and explosion is an ever-present threat when combu..

Update temperature control for a Claus unit with neural networks

North-West University, School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering: Schabort, C. J.  |  Neomagus, H. W. J. P.

The Natref oil refinery in Sasolburg, South Africa, had experienced refractory problems in the sulfur recovery unit’s (SRU’s) combustion chamber since startup (Fig. 1). Even though the SRU w..
