Bloch, Heinz P.
Heinz P. Bloch resides in Montgomery, Texas. He retired as Exxon Chemical’s Regional Machinery Specialist for the U.S. and has authored or co-written more than 780 publications, among them 23 comprehensive books on practical machinery management, failure analysis, failure avoidance, compressors, steam turbines, pumps, oil mist lubrication and optimized lubrication for industry. Mr. Bloch holds BS and MS degrees (cum laude) in mechanical engineering from the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). He is one of 10 inaugural inductees into NCE’s Hall of Fame, which honors its most distinguished alumni.
HP Reliability: Storage protection of positive displacement compressors
Preservation or corrosion inhibiting of inactive process machinery depends on the type of equipment, expected length of inactivity and the time required to restore the equipment to serv..
HP Reliability: Become familiar with turboexpander applications
For many years turboexpanders have been used in cryogenic processing plants to provide low-temperature refrigeration. Power recovery has been of secondary importance. Expander efficienc..
Consider turboexpanders
Turboexpanders are expansion turbines, rotating machines similar to steam turbines. By common usage, the terms "expansion turbines" and "turboexpanders" specifically exclude steam and c..
HP Reliability: Use shock pulse methods to monitor bearings
Several modern condition monitoring devices use shock pulse techniques to determine bearing quality. One of these is Prueftechnik's VIBSCANNER, marketed in the U.S. by Miami-based Ludec..
HP Reliability: Upgrade your compressor piston rods
For about the past ten years, the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating process has achieved commercial acceptance. After making inroads in gas turbine applications, these pure, dens..
HP Reliability: Digital control systems represent state-of-the-art
Control systems for steam turbines driving process compressors now provide many more functions beyond speed control. These systems can be custom programmed to provide whatever extent of..
HP Reliability: Consider toroidal chamber rotary compressors
In 1970, the first of five toroidal chamber rotary compressors entered service in nuclear test loops. Each of these machines was used to circulate 2,240 scfm of CO2 at 660°F; the s..
HP Reliability: Machine scanning is coming of age
For quite some time, our columns and bound texts have explained that forward-looking companies are no longer expecting experienced vibration analysts and technical personnel to look for..
HP Reliability: Cost-effective sheave maintenance
Good sheave alignment will increase efficiency by reducing premature wear or failure of belts, pulleys and bearings. This can be accomplished by several different alignment methods, suc..
HP Reliability: Consider floating piston compressors
Process plants have for decades applied nonlubricated reciprocating compressors. Early designs used carbon piston rings and rider bands; these were soon followed by Teflon, filled Teflo..
