The rule had been challenged by the National Environmental Development Association's Clean Air Project, a trade group representing ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, General Electric and several other major companies. Meanwhile, environmental groups had joined the EPA in defending the rule.

US appeals court backs EPA greenhouse gas rules
The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, in an 82-page ruling, unanimously upheld the EPA's central finding that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide endanger public health and welfare. The EPA regulations followed a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2007.
