Shell, Iogen kill plans to build Canada biofuel plant
Royal Dutch Shell and Iogen Corp. have killed a plan to build a next-generation biofuel plant in Canada. Iogen was once considered a world-leader in the development of ethanol from agricultural waste but has been unable to solve engineering problems that stand in the way of a commercially viable, large-scale plant.
Pöyry wins engineering on UPM Finland biorefinery
The Pöyry Industry business group has been awarded a contract for detail engineering in the UPM biorefinery project in Lappeenranta, Finland. The Lappeenranta biorefinery is UPM's first step in a strategy toward becoming a key player in advanced biofuels production, officials said.
EPA settles US biofuel violations with 30 companies
Thirty companies have agreed to pay what the EPA described as "modest" civil penalties for using fraudulent credits to meet a federal biofuel mandate. The settlement resolves violations of the Renewable Fuels Standard for companies such as ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips.

Envergent Technologies, a joint venture of UOP and Ensyn, has been given an award in the category of sustainable biofuels for its contributions toward sustainable biopower generation facilities. Brazilian mining company Vale and oil and gas company Petrobras will announce joint projects in a month's time. Vale and Petrobras, Brazil's biggest companies by market value, last Friday signed an accord to undertake joint projects in areas including fertilizer raw materials and oil and gas.
BP to start up Hull biorefinery in UK later this year
BP's planned biofuels refinery in Hull will be commissioned later this year, executive director Byron Grote said. When operational, the plant will have capacity to produce 420 million liters of ethanol and 500,000 tons of high protein animal feed from 1 million tons of locally grown wheat.
US trade groups slam EPA for E15 ethanol blend, citing risk to consumers
The API and AFPM trade groups are critical of the US EPA's recent decision to approve higher levels of ethanol in gasoline (E15) before testing is complete, alleging that it could put consumers at risk. Earlier this week, the EPA approved the first applications to make E15, a 50% increase from the E10 blend.
