The development of an industrial process like an ethylene (C2H4) plant requires skills and knowledge in two main subject areas: synthesis and analysis. Optimal configuration through process synthesis (PS) with selected task selection (STS) is the main theme of this work.

Hussein K. Abdel-Aal is an Emeritus Professor of chemical engineering and petroleum refining for NRC in Cairo, Egypt, and a former professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Abdel-Aal began his career in the oil industry as a process engineer in the Suez and Homs oil refineries in Syria before obtaining his PhD from Texas A&M University. He has conducted and coordinated projects involving a wide range of process development, feasibility studies, industrial research problems, and continuing education programs for organizations that include the Suez oil refinery; Petromin in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Arab Petroleum Investment Corp. in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; Hagler-Baily & Co. in Washington, D.C.; Mobil/Esso Oil companies in Libya; and Kuwait oil companies. Dr. Abdel-Aal is the author and editor of numerous technical articles and leading industry publications. He is fellow and founding member of the board of directors of the International Association of Hydrogen Energy.
