IRPC Operations: Biofuel opportunities in Brazil

By Sumedha Sharma, Technical Editor, Hydrocarbon Processing

Day 1 of IRPC Operations featured an informative presentation by Dr. Carlos Machado Fernando, Petrobras, on investment opportunities in biofuels in Brazil. Carlos talked about Brazilian government’s RenovaBio program designed to increase biofuel production, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and meet its Paris agreement targets without resorting to any damage to the tropical forests. He discussed details of certification and compliance requirements, decarbonization goals, and investor requirements and commented on the high emphasis on bio-ethanol production and the potential investment opportunities that biomethane presents. Citing energy data from Germany, Carlos compared the efficiencies of biomass power plants against those for solar photovoltaic cells and discussed he higher profitability for biobased power plants.

Carlos further discussed an alternate feedstock for biofuel production in Brazil, the Macauba palm which has tremendous potential owing to high oil yield, similar fatty acid composition as conventional vegetable oils, and ability to help regenerate degraded land. He concluded inviting global investment in renewable energy to tackle climate change and environmental degradation.
