Russia's Syzran oil refinery halts operations after April 18 drone attack

Russia's Syzran oil refinery has halted processing following a Ukrainian drone attack and subsequent damage to its equipment on April 18, two industry sources said.

The city of Syzran, located some 1,000 km (621 miles) from the border with Ukraine on the Volga river, was also attacked earlier on Wednesday, when a drone hit a residential house, killing two people.

It was not immediately clear if the refinery was also hit on Wednesday.

Ukraine has increased attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure in recent months as U.S.-brokered peace talks have been paused with Washington focused on the Iran war.

One of the sources said the refinery halted a primary refining unit, CDU-6, accounting for more than 70% of plant's total capacity.

Rosneft, which owns the plant, did not reply to a request for comment.

The Syzran oil refinery is able to process 8.5 metric MMtpy, or around 170,000 bpd. It processed 4.3 MMt of crude in 2024, producing 800,000 t of gasoline, 1.5 MMt of diesel and 700,000 t of fuel oil, according to industry sources.
