Clariant launches new CATOFIN™ 1000 propane dehydrogenation catalyst
- Clariant's latest propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalyst builds upon the commercially proven performance of previous generations of CATOFIN catalysts
- New CATOFIN 1000 is engineered to deliver enhanced selectivity and productivity gains compared to CATOFIN 310 Series
- Extended catalyst lifetime and up to 20% lower tar precursors significantly reduce fouling, optimizing plant operations and profitability
Clariant, a sustainability-focused specialty chemical company, today announced the launch of CATOFIN 1000, its next-generation propane dehydrogenation catalyst.

Building on the success of the commercially proven CATOFIN 310 Series, the new catalyst delivers improvement in both selectivity and productivity, extended lifetime, and up to 20% lower tar precursors, resulting in significantly reduced fouling. This combination of performance enhancements provides an exceptional value proposition for customers seeking to maximize operational efficiency and returns.
Together with Clariant's digital service portal CLARITY™, customers can further improve catalyst-related plant performance with 24/7 access to their real-time catalyst performance data, advanced visualization, analysis, and monitoring tools. The service is offered across all Clariant catalyst applications, and has helped optimize plant performance parameters regarding efficiency, sustainability, and safety.
Jace Wang, Vice President and Head of Propylene at Business Unit Catalysts commented, "With the introduction of CATOFIN 1000, we continue to push the boundaries of catalyst innovation. This latest advancement demonstrates our unwavering commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that drive superior performance for our customers in the propylene industry. The significant reduction in tar precursors and fouling, combined with enhanced selectivity and productivity, represents a major step forward in PDH technology."
CATOFIN is a globally leading catalyst technology for producing olefins such as propylene, isobutylene, and butylene/butadiene. Due to its excellent productivity and high reliability, CATOFIN technology has been chosen for numerous PDH plants worldwide. The CATOFIN process combines Clariant's tailor-made catalysts and Heat Generating Material (HGM) with Lummus's advanced process and is among the fastest growing technologies for producing propylene.
The new CATOFIN 1000 catalyst represents the latest evolution in this proven technology platform, offering PDH operators enhanced performance that translates directly to improved plant economics and operational reliability. The up to 20% reduction in tar precursors is particularly significant, as it minimizes fouling-related downtime and maintenance requirements, allowing plants to operate more efficiently over extended periods.
Since 2017, CATOFIN has been selected for more than 40 new projects around the world, including a recent 1.2-MMtpy PDH award in China.
