Nippon Steel obtains new certifications for pipes/tubes used in the chemical industry

To meet its customers’ need to promote carbon neutrality, Nippon Steel Corporation has obtained five SuMPO EPD certifications based on the SuMPO Environmental Labeling Program by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization, for its steel pipes and tubes used in the chemical industry and for boilers.

Our steel pipes and tubes used in the chemical industry and for boilers have been widely used in the energy sector, including petroleum refining, petrochemicals, and electric power and gas supply, as materials that are known for their excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and low-temperature characteristics, even under severe environments.
In recent years, there has been a growing demand from customers for decarbonization and new energy, such as nuclear power generation and high-pressure hydrogen applications. We offer multiple lineups through NSCarbolexTM Solution*3, our highly functional products/solution technology that contributes to CO2 emission reductions in society.

SuMPO EPD is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification system that uses the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to show quantitative environmental information covering the entire lifecycle of a product, from resource extraction to manufacturing, distribution, use, discarding, and recycling. This certification system makes it possible for Nippon Steel’s customers to objectively assess the environmental impact in the lifecycle of steel pipes and tubes used in the chemical industry and for boilers as well as easier to accommodate the likes of the move to display CO2 emissions on procured goods, which will be a subject of attention going forward.
In addition, by utilizing NSCarbolex Solution, we can further enhance our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality across the entire supply chain.

As the movement toward carbon neutrality accelerates around the world, customers are asking for evaluations that include the materials used.
In addition to constantly pursuing the world's best technologies and manufacturing capabilities, Nippon Steel will continue to proactively disclose the environmental performance of its steel products, which are extremely recyclable and environmentally sustainable materials, while meeting the sustainability standards outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.

*1:SuMPO EPD, a SuMPO Environmental Label Program (former name: EcoLeaf)
A Type III environmental declaration in accordance with the ISO 14025 standard, also known as Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). EPD quantitatively discloses the information on the environment of the declared products from resource mining, manufacturing, using, disposing, and recycling. The SuMPO EPD is operated by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO). (“EcoLeaf” underwent a name change to “SuMPO EPD” in April 2024.)
