India's Bharat taps CB&I delayed coking technology for Kochi refinery expansion
CB&I’s Lummus Technology business sector will license its delayed coking technology to Bharat Petroleum for the Kochi refinery expansion project in Ambalamugal, India, officials said on Thursday.
The delayed coking unit (DCU) will have the capacity to process 3.84 tpd of vacuum resid and small quantities of clarified oil from the FCC.
The unit will be designed to produce sour fuel gas, LPG, naphtha, light and heavy gas oil, and petroleum coke.
The addition of the DCU is one part of the Kochi refinery integrated expansion project that includes a crude/vacuum distillation unit, diesel hydrotreating unit, VGO hydrotreater and petrochemical FCC unit to increase product output and quality.
Lummus Technology will provide the basic engineering and detailed proprietary heater design, pre-commissioning, commissioning, training and start-up services.
Meanwhile, CB&I’s project engineering and construction sector will provide the detailed design of the coke drum structure.
The addition of the DCU to the Kochi refinery will support Bharat Petroleum in expanding its crude processing capacity from 9.5 to 15.5 million tpy, add capability to process 100% high- sulfur crudes and improve the yield of light and middle distillates, the company says.
CB&I says its experience in coking technology allows refiners to convert and upgrade heavy residual stocks to more valuable lighter distillate products and coke.
