Motiva picks KBR to build coker for refinery expansion in Port Arthur, Texas

KBR announced that its subsidiary Roberts & Schaefer (R&S) has been selected to construct a petroleum coker (pet coke) material handling system for Motiva’s refinery expansion project in Port Arthur, Texas.

The contract is part of a larger effort by Motiva to expand the Port Arthur refinery. The expansion is expected to increase capacity to 600,000 bpd in 2012, making it the largest refinery in the US and one of the top 10 in the world.

R&S will install, start-up, and test the pet coke system, as well as provide on-site construction management and technical support for commissioning/testing, KBR said.

The $9.1mn contract award follows the execution by R&S of the engineering and procurement phase of the project.

“We are proud to continue our work on the Motiva Port Arthur refinery expansion, a project of vital importance to both Motiva and the Southeast Texas region,” said Ted Wziontek, vice president of KBR Minerals.

Motiva is a 50-50 joint venture between Shell and Saudi Aramco.
