Editorial Comment: Honoring the industry’s best … take 2!

Due to Tropical Storm Imelda, Hydrocarbon Processing issued its first force majeure in postponing the third annual HP Awards.

Due to Tropical Storm Imelda, Hydrocarbon Processing issued its first force majeure in postponing the third annual HP Awards. The storm, classified as the fifth-wettest tropical cyclone on record in the U.S., battered Houston and outlying cities with more than 43 in. of rainfall in less than a 24-hr period. The storm caused severe flooding in parts of the city, including near the venue of the awards event. Therefore, it was in the best interest of everyone involved to postpone the event to a later date.

The reason I mention this event is because the award winners were intended to be listed in the October issue; it was even teased within the “Inside the Issue”  section on the Table of Contents page. The HP Awards did come to fruition, which honored the best of the hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI).

These awards recognize the many technologies and people that have, and are, making the hydrocarbon processing industry safer, more efficient and more profitable. Over the past several years, it has been an honor for Hydrocarbon Processing to compile these awards. So many individuals, companies and teams in this industry deserve recognition for their achievements, and the HP Awards was established to do just that.

The HP Awards celebrate innovative technologies and people that have been instrumental in improving facility operations over the past year. The awards cover 17 strategic categories in the hydrocarbon processing industry. Nearly 100 nominations were submitted from more than 20 countries. Each abstract was voted on by an independent Hydrocarbon Processing advisory board.

The following is a complete list of all categories that were honored at the awards ceremony. The winners in each category are detailed on pg. 39. The list of award categories includes:

  • Best AR/VR/AI Technology
  • Best Asset Monitoring Technology
  • Best Process Controls/Automation Technology
  • Best Health, Safety or Environmental Contribution
  • Best Catalyst Technology
  • Digitalization—Best Digital Twin/Operator Training Technology
  • Digitalization—Best Process/Plant Operations Optimization Technology
  • Digitalization—Best Software Technology
  • EPC/Licensor/Consultant of the Year
  • Executive of the Year
  • Best Fluid Flow Technology
  • Best Gas Processing/LNG Technology
  • Best Instrument Technology
  • Lifetime Achievement
  • Most Promising Engineer
  • Best Petrochemical Technology
  • Best Refining Technology.

Hydrocarbon Processing is honored to be among the people and companies that make these awards possible. These technologies and people are instrumental in providing products for everyday life, as well as advancing and optimizing plant operations for the good of the industry and the world.

The people working in the HPI are creating and optimizing technologies, as well as engineering, testing and providing equipment and services to increase production capacity, energy efficiency, safety and reliability. They are doing this while also developing systems to decrease emissions and carbon footprint, and to operate cleanly and safely.

In short, the people that make up our dynamic industry are at the forefront in creating the products to advance modern living for billions of people around the world. Hydrocarbon Processing is proud to recognize these individuals and companies for the work they do to make life better. HP
