Ensure uniformity of air preheater flow to obtain maximum heat transfer efficiency

Uniform flow distribution inside process equipment is desirable for maximizing performance. However, flow maldistribution occurs even in seemingly symmetrical design because of asymmetric inlet and outlet piping. Quantification of the equipment efficiency loss caused by this non-uniform distribution is an important field of study in chemical engineering. A case study is presented of a shell-and-tube air preheater that experienced a maldistribution of the gas heating medium on the shell side.
