Visbreaking technology: Is it obsolete, or is there potential for upgrade?

Visbreaking technology is a well-known, simple thermal cracking process for residual oils.

Visbreaking technology is a well-known, simple thermal cracking process for residual oils. However, the operation of visbreaking units has been largely abandoned due to lower yields (< 15 wt%–20 wt%) of valuable products from vacuum residues, which, in turn, is caused by the limited stability of visbroken fuel oil. So, the need still exists for research to upgrade or change the current visbreaking scenario with novel process schemes, such as aqueous catalytic visbreaking, non-aqueous catalytic visbreaking, and hydrovisbreaking for increasing the conversion levels while meeting the stability of visbroken fuel oil.
