Keeping plants safe requires huge investments in safety instrumented systems (SISs) while balancing the high cost of regulatory compliance. Because of the uniqueness of plant equipment, processes and applications, the recently approved IEC 61511 functional safety standard for process equipment requires users of SIS equipment to test it for compliance. Previous and current standards do not require adherence to strict time schedules for compliance resulting in a landscape littered with different generations of safety equipment and overlaps in meeting codes. Analysis. IEC 61511 was developed for end users, designers and systems integrators.
