Interest in performing rigorous hazard and risk analysis and applying certified safety instrumented systems (SISs) has increased considerably since the publication of the IEC 61508 safety standard and, more recently, the IEC 61511 and ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 standards for process safety. However, the owners of a large installed base of SISs in the US and worldwide are rightly concerned about the implications of these standards on their existing systems. The "grandfather clause" specified in the ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 standard should allay many of those fears.
