Twenty years ago, on December 3, 1984, water contaminated a tank of methyl isocyanate (MIC) in Bhopal, India, initiating a series of events that led to a catastrophic release of toxic MIC, ultimately killing as many as 20,000 residents and injuring over 100,000.
Immediately after, leaders from the chemical industry asked the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) to lead a collaborative effort to eliminate catastrophic processes. On March 25, 1985, AIChE formed the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) with seventeen charter member companies, with the mission to:
