Effective filtration of lubrication and hydraulic systems is of real importance to the reliability professional. The general idea is to allow no particles larger than the clearances in system components to pass through filters. This is expected to give a nominal measure of protection against catastrophic clogging or jamming. From a practical point of view, solids contamination exists as either silt or chips. Silt consists of particles 5 micrometers and smaller, i.e., in the submicron size range. While chips generally respond to filtration, filtering out silt may be costly and maintenance-intensive.
