Commercial-scale gas-to-liquids (GTL) operations started in the 1990s when Mossgas in South Africa and Shell in Malaysia brought their plants online. Other than pilot facilities, these two GTL plants constitute the entire commercial GTL industry.
Project development was hindered by the very high capital costs of the processes, but technological improvements and high energy prices are stimulating a major wave of construction of next-generation production facilities. So says an outlook from industry analysts Purvin & Gertz (P&G).
