Tackling the problems of knowledge management (KM) is a bit like tackling world hunger. KM pervades all aspects of almost every manufacturing enterprise. Our recent survey on the subject confirmed that many feel their company does not do a good job at KM. This is true even at the plant level, where a lot of information is available. Why is KM important now? Manufacturers are losing their most experienced people at an alarming rate! Some of this is due to the natural attrition of retirement, but some of it is due to the downsizing that has been affecting industry for over a decade. Yet over 40% of the survey respondents said their company had no formal knowledge-gathering program at all
