Shipments in the U.S. of chemicals rose 6% in 2000, to total $464 billion. Gains were in life sciences, 7-1/4%; specialty chemicals, 6-3/4%; and industrial chemicals, 5%. Exports. According to data from the American Chemistry Council (ACC), as a result of a buoyant global economy, exports were the main driver. Despite a high dollar, exports rose 14-1/4%, reaching $80.5 billion - a new record. Imports from Western Europe and Asia rose more than 18%. Thus, the trade surplus fell to $7 billion.
