Through the first nine months of 2000, $23 billion in chemical deals were completed. This compares to $29.4 billion in the year-ago period. Including deals that have closed since then, it appears unlikely that 2000 will eclipse the 1999 record of $38.2 billion. This assessment is by Peter Young, president of the American Section of Societe de Chimie Industrielle (www.societe.org).
