Water reuse decisions are driven by the cost of
water, availability, water-discharge restrictions and public
relations. There are many water reuse opportunities in
refineries, as shown in Table 1.
The first step in a water reuse project is to
create a detailed, plantwide water balance. The water balance
must include typical and peak flows, as well as noncontinuous
flows such as washing procedures. It is helpful to include
pump ratings, transfer-line sizes and typical pressure data.
