In 1983, three deaerators ruptured from cracking.
Due to concern over potential cracking in other deaerators,
many firms conducted independent surveys. Inspections by one
refiner, Exxon Corp., found cracks in 40% of the steel
vessels, a frequency that is consistent with the NACE
findings. Exxon's inspections revealed several conditions
that are conducive to the formation of cracks.1
They are:
Weld defects - they may act as localized stress
raisers
Residual tensile stresses associated with
nonstress-relieved welds
Localized stress associated with head-to-shell
junctures or poorly designed supports an
