In 1983, three deaerators ruptured from cracking. Due to concern over potential cracking in other deaerators, many firms conducted independent surveys. Inspections by one refiner, Exxon Corp., found cracks in 40% of the steel vessels, a frequency that is consistent with the NACE findings.
