Welcome to the 2021 AFPM Summit: Recovery and Resilience—Transforming for the Future

Chet Thompson, President and CEO, American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers

Welcome to the second annual AFPM Summit. Although I would have enjoyed seeing everyone face-to-face, I’m proud to share with you this year’s program and eager to get events underway.

Looking back at the past year and the many challenges we have all faced, I am very impressed and proud of the ability of the people in our industries to persevere, succeed and work to enhance our operations at every level. Your hard work and dedication to the continued advancements of our industries led to this year’s theme of Recovery and Resilience—Transforming for the Future, and inspired a program that focuses on emerging process technologies, process safety, methods to improve reliability and operations, mechanical integrity, training, leadership and supporting positive culture in the workplace.

A number of panel discussions have been planned that will undoubtedly lead to interesting conversations that will continue beyond this event, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in refining, increasing utilization post-COVID 19, and a conversation on how fluid catalytic converters can fit into a low-carbon world, among others.

AFPM’s Chief Industry Analyst Susan Grissom and John Auers, Executive Vice President at Turner Mason & Company, will discuss how energy transition policies could impact petroleum refining on a global basis and their impact on the U.S. downstream industry, how those impacts could vary in different regions of the U.S., and what factors could delay and mitigate the impact of the energy transition on the downstream industry.

While we cannot be together this year, the team at AFPM has worked to provide a virtual experience that closely replicates the in-person experience, and I encourage you to visit our virtual platform of exhibition halls, networking lounges and town hall-style discussions.

Thank you again for joining us. I hope you take full advantage of all the great insights and content that the AFPM Summit has to offer over the next few days. Please enjoy the program, and we look forward to seeing you—in person—next year.
