AIChE Process Technology Conference: Houston – The Low Carbon Capital of the World
Charles McConnell, Executive Director of the Center for Carbon Management in Energy at the University of Houston, opened the first day of the AIChE Process Technology Conference with his keynote presentation titled, “Houston – The Low Carbon Capital of the World,” followed by a Q&A with the audience.
McConnell began with the claim that Houston is the energy capital of the world. He continued by describing energy sustainability and claimed that there are three legs of the stool: who has access to energy, how much it costs, and the environmental responsibility of those who have access to energy. “It takes three to keep the stool together, not just one or two,” McConnell said. He went on to explain the energy transition and defined the mission as decarbonization. Due to the greater Houston region having more emissions and proximal geology when compared with the rest of the world, he stated that Houston is best suited for carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS).
