IRPC Operations: How digital dialogue is changing operational excellence

Author: Tyler Campbell, Contributing Editor, Hydrocarbon Processing

Walter Pesenti, Global Operational Excellence Manager for INEOS, provided the opening keynote presentation at IRPC Operations. His presentation was titled, “Wading through the Perfect Storm – Delivering Performance Excellence in the Digital Era.”

Pesenti began by speaking about the importance of operational excellence and how the digital dialogue is changing the way it is defined. He provided chokepoints on supply-demand dynamics, production and operations, personal safety, and talent availability. He then outlined the values at risk, such as execution damage in the market and hefty fines for incidences. He went on to give possible solutions using digital technology. For example, the use of predictive analysis to mitigate execution damage and using predictive analysis to alleviate risk. Pesenti ended his presentation by urging the audience to consider proactive solutions when faced with digital transformation challenges:

  • Use analytics to determine what could go wrong
  • Consider using automation to prevent it from going wrong
  • Compare the cost of digital solutions to the risk of the operation
