2021 IRPC Process—Alternative fuels, biofuels and clean fuels

As Hydrocarbon Processing’s IRPC Process continued Wednesday morning with more than 1,200 virtual attendees, Paolo Corvo, Global Key Account Manager for Clariant, presented a session titled, “Bio-refinery: Bringing commercial cellulosic ethanol production to the market with sunliquid®.”

Corvo began his presentation by stressing the importance of decarbonizing the transport sector to achieve global climate targets, and that this could not be achieved without advanced biofuels. “We have been developing the sunliquid® technology to convert waste streams into cellulosic ethanol; it is available now and can be used as it is or further processed to be utilized in different modes of transportation, from gasoline blending to marine and aviation,” Corvo said.

The technology platform also provides access to 2G sugars and carbon-neutral biofuels made from residues and integrated enzyme production. Corvo stated that the sunliquid® biofuel offers > 95% CO2 saving compared to fossil fuels, which is equivalent to approximately 120,000 t/yr of CO2, or the annual emissions of 35,000 cars.

The process shows a flexibility on a broad range of feedstock. Process conditions and biocatalysts were developed and performance runs executed in the company’s pre-commercial plant for a wide range of lignocellulosic biomass, including wheat straw, corn stover, forestry residues, rice straw, cane bagasse, palm midrib, empty fruit bunches and others.

Corvo also provided details of Clariant’s first sunliquid® plant in Podari, Romania, that is planned for completion by the end of 2021.
