AVEVA World Summit 2018: Digital Transformation—A Strategic Roadmap

Mike Rhodes, Hydrocarbon Processing

More than 350 senior industry leaders from around the world gathered October 9–11 at the renowned La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs, California for the AVEVA World Summit 2018.  These leaders and pioneers from the industrial sector and leading companies shared their discoveries of what it takes to succeed in what has been described as the fourth industrial revolution.

More than 30 presentations, nine panel discussions and the opportunity to get hands-on with the latest technology innovations—some of which have yet to hit the market—proved to be the highlights of the two-day event.

The Innovation Hub featured the latest technology innovations and experts to showcase their capabilities.

“I’m honored that we have so many customers with us,” said Craig Hayman, CEO of AVEVA Group Plc., “including Jean-Pascal Tricoire, CEO and Chairman of Schneider Electric, who is our partner and customer.” The collaboration between the two companies and the possibilities their combined efforts present were a common thread in the event presentations, discussions in the Innovation Hub and throughout networking and evening events.

Keynotes

Several industry experts and special guests provided the summit attendees with invaluable information and insights into the industry’s future. Guy Kawasaki, the former chief evangelist at Apple and a dominant player in the Silicon Valley business scene, shared his ideas and methodologies to develop and foster innovation in the industry.  Jim Burkhard, Chief Analyst for IHS Markit, talked about how forces such as fluctuating oil prices and evolving market economics are making digital transformation an ever-greater imperative. TechnipFMC Senior VP of Onshore Process Technology, Stan Knez, shared how his company is embracing truly transformative technology, how they made the decision, implemented the change, and what the medium and long-term outcomes have been.

In Thursday morning’s session, champion racing driver David Coulthard and former managing director of Formula 1 motor racing, Mark Gallagher, spoke about how the use of digital twins has transformed their sport, driving efficiency, speed and agility in all aspects of operations.

Studies and stories were also presented by companies that include GS Caltex, Southern Company, Orano, OT Industries, Japan’s largest shipyard Imabari, Merck Millipore, Nestle, ExxonMobil, SNC – Lavellin, Basra Gas Co., Air Liquide, Lexmark, ARC Research, Roy Hill, ENEL, Covestro, PGESCO, Shell, IDC, Florida Institute of Technology, Schneider Electric, McDermott, Lamprell, Eversendai and the National Water Company of Saudi Arabia, among others.
