NextDecade to use Honeywell liquefaction technology for 30-MMtpy LNG terminal

Honeywell announced that its industry-leading liquefaction process technology and equipment will be used in NextDecade's Rio Grande LNG Train 4 and Train 5 Projects in Brownsville, Texas, through an agreement with engineering, procurement and construction contractor Bechtel Energy, Inc.

NextDecade will use Honeywell’s high efficiency coil wound heat exchanger (CWHE) equipment and C3MR process technology to help optimize production, improve reliability, and lower facility operating expenses. Honeywell’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology will also be used for the first three liquefaction trains at this facility. The additional two trains will help increase LNG production capacity at Rio Grande LNG by more than 66 percent, from 18 million tonnes per annum (MMtpy) to 30 MMtpy.1 All five trains are expected to become operational by mid-2031.

“As the demand for energy increases, LNG will continue to play a significant role in meeting this demand and supporting global energy security,” said Christina Andersen, President, Gas & LNG, Honeywell. “Honeywell’s scalable and customizable technology helps producers optimize facility performance and efficiency, and we work closely with our customers to provide solutions that meet their individual goals.”

Honeywell’s LNG offerings include pretreatment and liquefaction technologies along with cutting-edge automation and software technologies to help optimize the overall LNG process scheme. To help reduce risk and expedite construction timelines to enable LNG facilities to enter operation quicker than those built with traditional construction methods, Honeywell also offers modular LNG technology that can be built off-site and shipped to export facilities. Honeywell’s coil wound heat exchanger equipment provides safe operation, maximizes space available, and offers the highest throughput in a reliable and robust unit. Additionally, Honeywell LNG's C3MR process is the most utilized liquefaction process in the world.2
