Koppö Energia Oy to license thyssenkrupp Uhde technology for Finnish e-methanol plant

  • E-methanol produced with captured CO2
  • uhde® green methanol technology

Koppö Energia Oy has chosen uhde® green methanol technology and ordered a front-end engineering design (FEED) from thyssenkrupp Uhde. The planned e-methanol plant is part of a power-to-x (P2X) project developed by Koppö Energia in Kristinestad, Finland. With a planned capacity of 450 metric tpd of e-methanol in various grades, the different product grades will support the maritime and e-gasoline fuel markets.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde: “We are proud that our technology and implementation know-how will contribute to this pioneering project by Koppö Energia Oy. This is an excellent proof point for cross-industrial cooperation in the establishment of green methanol as a fuel.”

While grey methanol is usually produced from natural gas, green methanol – often called e-methanol – is produced via direct hydrogenation of CO2. Using uhde® green methanol production technology and green hydrogen produced from green electricity and water, the resulting e-methanol has a much lower carbon footprint. The necessary renewable hydrogen will be produced by a 200-MW water electrolysis plant. CO2 will be captured in the city of Vaasa in Finland from a waste incineration facility. It is then liquified and transported via trucks to the P2X facilities.

Thomas Zirngibl, Director at Koppö Energia: “We are very pleased to cooperate with thyssenkrupp Uhde on this project as they bring the right technologies as well as the integration skills for ensuring a smooth tie-in and project delivery.”
