Russia's idle oil refining capacity seen rising by 5.7% m/m in May

Russia's offline primary oil refining capacity is seen rising by 5.7% in May from April to 3.18 MM tonnes (t), according to calculations based on data from industry sources.

Idle capacity for April has been revised up by 3% to 2.91 MMt, the calculations also showed.

The upward revision in April was due in part to an emergency outage at the Komsomolsk refinery in Russia's far east, as well as the stoppage of unit CDU-5 at the Orsk refinery and the extension of unit CDU-3's stoppage at the Volgograd refinery.

A rise in idle capacity means refineries use less feedstock to produce fuel, making potentially more crude available for export.
