Sulfur tank explosion and fire at Tesoro Carson refinery
The LA Times reported that a fire erupted at Tesoro’s Carson refinery after a 1-ton sulfur tank exploded around 1 p.m. August 26th. The insulation in the tank caught fire after the sulfur dissipated. There were no injuries at the site of the explosion, but a “shelter-in-place” order was issued by the sheriff’s office for anyone within one-quarter mile of the facility. The order was lifted in the early evening.
An incident response team was on site monitoring air quality and did not detect harmful levels of toxins in the atmosphere.
Tesoro’s Carson refinery, located near the Los Angeles harbor is one of the largest refineries on the West Coast and operates at a capacity of 380 Mbpd. The refinery processes heavy crude and manufactures gasoline, jet fuel and other products.
