Enbridge plans pipeline expansions in Canada, US

Enbridge said Friday it will spend 400 million Canadian dollars ($404.9 million) to expand its mainline pipeline system between Hardisty, Alberta and the US border.
The Canadian pipeline company, which in November announced it would go ahead with a C$1.8 billion expansion of the system in the oil-rich province of Alberta, said the latest expansion will add 230,000 bpd of capacity.
Enbridge said the expansion will involve increased pumping horsepower, with no line pipe construction. It's targeting an in-service date in 2015, subject to regulatory approvals.
The expansion is the latest project announced by energy and pipeline companies to boost capacity amid a dramatic increase in crude output across North America.
Pipeline companies like Enbridge and TransCanada have slated billions of dollars in new pipeline expansions to handle more crude output from Alberta's booming oil sands development, as well as projects to boost capacity from new production in North America's Midwest, including North Dakota and Saskatchewan.
