Oman awards contract to Chevron Lummus for Sohar refinery expansion

Oman Refineries and Petrochemicals Co. (ORPC) will use ISOCRACKING technology from Chevron Lummus Global as part of its Sohar refinery expansion project, seeking to boost margins and increase production.

The Sohar hydrocracking facility in Oman will process almost 74,000 bpd of vacuum gasoil (VGO) and light cycle oil, the company said.

The investment, which was not disclosed, will enable the Sohar refinery to increase its naphtha production for its petrochemicals complex and produce high quality ultra-low sulfur diesel and kerosene, officials said.

Chevron Lummus’ hydrocracking technology was selected by ORPC after a thorough analysis showed it offered the best overall economics by a well-proven process scheme, the company said.

Chevron Lummus is a joint venture for hydroprocessing technologies between US energy major Chevron and international engineering firm Lummus.

ORPC is the leading Omani producer and distributor of refined products in Oman. The Sohar refinery is the largest in the country, with a CDU capacity of 116,000 bpd.

It is located about 220 km northwest of capital city Muscat.

Oman also selected a joint venture of UOP and Foster Wheeler to provide basic design and engineering services for the refinery’s solvent de-asphalting unit, according to news reports.
