NPRA urges approval of Keystone XL pipeline as House committee holds hearing on issue
Charles T. Drevna, president of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA), issued a statement on Monday in support of proposed legislation that would require the Obama administration to decide by Nov.1 whether to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport oil from western Canada to refineries in Texas.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing Monday on the proposed legislation, which is backed by Keystone XL supporters who want to get construction of the pipeline started, the NPRA said.
The new pipeline, combined with an existing pipeline, would bring more than 1.1mn bpd of oil to the United States from oil sands in Alberta.
In his statement, Drevna said:
“The Keystone XL pipeline would benefit American families and businesses by supplying US refineries with oil they need to manufacture gasoline, diesel and other fuels to serve the American people. Bringing in more oil from our close friend, neighbor and ally Canada would strengthen America’s economic and national security and provide jobs for American workers. It would also make America less reliant on oil from unstable parts of the world thousands of miles away.
“At a time when millions of Americans are concerned about unrest in the Middle East and North Africa threatening future world oil supplies and driving up the price of gasoline, it’s unbelievable that the Obama administration continues to ponder and ponder whether to approve this critically important pipeline.
“A mountain of evidence shows the pipeline would be safe. Yet opponents concoct objection after objection after objection – no matter how weak – in an effort to stop construction. The time has come to end these endless delays and move forward to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline in America’s national interest.”
