BP plans $388mn cleaner diesel project at Cherry Point refinery in Washington
BP will begin a $388mn project in May to install hydrogen diesel units at its Cherry Point refinery in Washington, according to a recent report in the Bellingham Herald newspaper.
The hydrogen diesel units will help BP meet stricter air quality laws, the company said.
Once in place, the remaining diesel currently allowed to be sold at higher sulfur levels will be converted into ultra-low-sulfur diesel, the newspaper report said.
With this project, we wont be making one more drop of fuel, but it will be a cleaner burning product, BP spokesman Michael Abendhoff told the Bellingham Herald.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2012, with the new units adding 10-15 jobs to the facility. BP Cherry Point currently employs about 805 staff, the report says.
The general contractor for the project is JH Kelly of Longview, Washington.
The Cherry Point refinery currently processes about 225,000 bpd of crude oil, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), with 90% becoming gasoline, diesel or jet fuel.
It is the largest oil refinery in the state of Washington.
