EIA’s annual energy review

The Annual Energy Review 2009 (AER), released on August 19, 2010, provides the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) most comprehensive look at integrated energy statistics. Summary statistics from the report indicate some interesting data.

In 2009, US primary energy production fell 0.6% to 73.0 quadrillion Btu, down from the record high of 73.4 quadrillion Btu the previous year.  US renewable energy production reached 8 quadrillion Btu in 2009, with wind energy registering the largest year-to-year percentage increase among renewable sources.  US primary energy consumption fell to 95 quadrillion Btu in 2009, down from the all-time high of 102 quadrillion Btu in 2007 and 5%  below the 2008 level.

From 2008 to 2009, US energy net imports fell 12 percent to 23 quadrillion Btu while petroleum net imports totaled 21 quadrillion Btu.  US carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption fell 7% from 2008 to 2009, due primarily to a decrease in consumption of coal and petroleum.

The Annual Energy Review 2009 covers all major energy sources and all energy-consuming sectors of the US economy from 1949 through 2009.  See the full report:
