The delayed coking unit (DCU) is the technology of choice for the upgrade of heavy hydrocarbon residues—i.e., bottom-of-the-barrel upgrading. Vacuum residue (VR) from the vacuum distillation unit is fed to the DCU, which is a semi-batch process typically having two coke drums in one block of the DCU. At any given time, VR is fed to one of the two coke drums (i.e., the online drum where thermal cracking takes place) and petroleum coke is gradually filled. Hydrocarbon vapors from the top of the online coke drum go to the fractionator for the separation of various liquid and gaseous products.
