Legionella pneumophila (“legionella”) bacteria cause Legionellosis, a pneumonia-like illness that infects persons with compromised immune systems and can be fatal. These bacteria are common in natural waters and thrive in warm waters found in cooling towers. Cooling towers that have high concentrations of water droplets (aerosols) entrained in the vapor plume can broadcast aerosols several miles before the droplets reach the ground. If water from these cooling towers has high populations of legionella bacteria, vulnerable persons who inhale the aerosols have a high risk for potential infection.
