This is a good column on peak oil production ("HPIn Europe," March 2008, p. 11). I have been watching this topic since 2000 when I was at BP. Factoring in the rapidly growing economies of China, India, Vietnam and other developing nations, I think the peak will come sooner than 2012. The next two years will be critical for the world economy. Leading technological nations are not implementing massive energy alternative programs which are necessary to head off the energy crash. People are still driving big cars. Cities are still developing outward. Ethanol continues to be subsidized, which cannot last forever. And globalization means nations are using more energy
