Ultrafiltration
(UF) and microfiltration (MF) are membrane-based technologies that remove suspended solids, but virtually no dissolved contaminants, from aqueous streams. There are two configurations: hollow fibers (flexible plastic filaments with a thickness slightly larger than a human hair) and flat plastic sheets layered into a spiral configuration like a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Municipal water plants often use UF to purify potable water; however, industrial plant personnel are just beginning to install UF as an alternative for gravity clarification and filtration systems.
