Global ethylene demand grew over 5% in 2004. Ethylene unit utilization in all regions increased significantly, and prices in all regions were sustained at historically high levels. Profitability improvement over 2003 in the major ethylene end-use chains was substantial, says an analysis from CMAI (www.cmaiglobal.com). All basic market fundamentals are indicating the global ethylene industry has entered into a strong period of recovery that should carry well into 2006 and could extend into 2007. Cash margins for major regions – North America, Asia and West Europe – will accelerate to a substantial level during 2005 and be maintained above reinvestment levels through 2007.
