It may sound far-fetched, but the ramifications of incorrect pump startup and shutdown procedures have recently been debated in reliability-related litigation in US courts. At issue was performance of multistage centrifugal pumps in pipeline service at a location that had no limits on motor inrush currents. The pumps operated above their first rotor critical speed and operation at the criticals had to be limited to two or three seconds.
