This year is the 80th anniversary (Fig. 1) of the
introduction of the floating-roof tank (FRT). It provides
economical and environmentally friendly storage for a large
range of products manufactured by the hydrocarbon processing
industry (HPI). The FRT remains the most widely used method
to safely control evaporative emissions from volatile
products. Floating roofs (FRs) are used in open-top tanks,
inside tanks with fixed roofs or in tanks that are totally
closed. Thousands of FRTs are in operation globally with some
in almost continuous operation for over 50 years.
