For some time now, the European Commission has been
looking at the problem of emissions from ships - both inland
and seagoing - as part of its concerns over emissions control
and the role that emissions play in global warming. In the
latest move, the EC issued an amended proposal for a
Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council
amending Directive 1999/32/EC as regards the sulfur content
of marine fuels.
However, the EC has expressed growing concern about
the amount of environmental pollution in the vicinity of
ports, particularly those with heavy traffic and serviced by
long-distance, oceangoing vessels. The
