Hanger and spring support-related installation oversights are responsible for many excessive pipe stress incidents. Piping-induced loads will often cause pump casings to deflect. Consequently, important internal parts, especially bearings and mechanical seals, become misaligned and fail prematurely. Pump reliability improvement efforts must, therefore, include verifying acceptable pipe stress values. It would be very difficult to ascertain that fluid machinery nozzle loads are within acceptable limits unless a computer- based pipe stress analysis has been performed first. This stress analysis will also confirm if the tentatively selected pipe supports are appropriate for the job.
