2.6% in 2002, well ahead of the 10-yr growth trend of
1.4%/yr. So says the new BP Statistical Review of World
Energy 2003 (www.bp.com). Growth in energy demand of 19.7% in
China was behind much of this relative strength.
Energy consumption in the world, excluding China,
grew by less than 1% during 2002, reflecting a second year of
below-trend economic growth.
Refining. Capacity utilization for most
regions peaked in the second half of the 1990s. Slower oil
demand growth has meant falling refinery utilization for most
regions since then (Fig. 1).
