Earlier this year, the new fuel specifications to come into effect Jan. 1, 2005, became law in Europe. When they were initially proposed, the immediate reaction had been one of horror at the amount of investment that was going to be required and the time it would take to achieve these standards. In the event, as is well known, the transition to the new lower-sulfur levels was achieved with far less pain than had been anticipated, thanks largely to the efforts of catalyst manufacturers.
